Legacy Burdens in IFS Therapy
In this workshop series, we’ll explore the Legacy and Cultural Burdens we carry – and how to address them within the context of IFS therapy. During this series, you will:
Develop a working idea of legacy and cultural burdens – understanding how they shape identity, behavior, and belonging across generations.
Explore your own legacy burdens – turning inward to notice what you carry from those who came before.
Reflect on the blessings and burdens you carry from your ancestors – honoring the complexity of your inheritance.
Begin to understand the implications of growing up in the culture you were raised in – recognizing how collective narratives live within the internal system.
Gain a working knowledge of how to work with your client’s legacy and cultural burdens – bringing clarity, care, and structure to this deep layer of healing.

Legacy and Cultural Burdens
Legacy Burdens are burdens that we receive from our ancestors. Cultural Burdens are burdens that we receive from our cultures. Both Legacy and Cultural Burdens create beliefs and patterns of behavior that can be perpetuated over many generations, such as the continuation of trauma in a family, or internalized Patriarchy in our culture.

The Energy We Inherit
These burdens are not just learned behavior but a part of distinct energy field that connects us all to each other, in any group (ethnic, religious etc.) but especially our families. This energy is not just a concept it is a physical presence or entity that is held or embodied in each participant and this energy can get passed on to future generations if not attended to.
During this workshop series, you will explore Legacy and Cultural Burdens, including your own ancestral connections, blessings, and burdens. You will have the chance to do your own work as well as to work with your clients’ Legacy and Cultural Burdens.

Kay Gardner
Kay Gardner, LCPC, IFS Lead trainer has over 45 years of clinical experience and 35 years in private practice. She is a senior Lead Trainer for Internal Family Systems (IFS) and has been in leadership since the beginning of the approach, in the early 90’s. She also came to IFS as an experienced therapist and a teacher of Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy and as a result, helped to integrate the body into the IFS practice.
In earlier work, Kay was the founder of The Women’s Circle, a women’s program in Chicago, and has also led various successful workshops around the country for men and women, including Persephone’s Journey; Men and Their Mothers; Women and Their Fathers; as well as Sacred Theatre for Couples, which brought her body-centered theatre approach to work with couples in groups or individually.
In her most recent work, presented nationally and internationally, Kay was the first to bring the notion of Legacy Burdens to IFS and has co-developed a unique program that integrates work with energy, chakras, and developmental stages, called a Possibility of awakening. Kay brings a body-centered and spiritual approach to all her work.
She is a warm, gifted, and heartfelt presenter who consistently garners rave reviews from her audiences.
