Pragmatic Spirituality in Practice
In this workshop, we’ll explore how to cultivate inner perception not as abstract ideals, but as concrete, learnable skills you can bring into your practice:
Briefly acknowledge Unattached Burdens – unlike previous workshops where they were central, this event will introduce new material not covered before.
Compare IFS concepts with cross-cultural traditions -exploring how anthropological accounts of spirit possession and the porous mind offer deep insight into non-Western models of healing.
Use the metaphor of past lives as a tool – treating reincarnation not as doctrine, but as a language for engaging what arises in the therapeutic space.
Integrate psychedelic experience with IFS – discovering how expanded states of consciousness open access to deep psychic material, and how IFS offers a safe and structured way to meet it.
Navigate the inner world with grounded practices – including the cultivation of interoception, imagination as perception, and relational spirituality rooted in presence and humility.
Work with attention, unknowing, and the release of constraint – developing the capacity to meet the psyche without needing to control or define what arises.

Unattached Burdens in IFS
We are living through a mental health emergency, and the dominant models of care are failing. While IFS has already transformed the therapeutic landscape, the revolution must go deeper.
Some of what emerges in the psyche is neither Part nor Self in the language of IFS. These are burdens, beings, or energies not rooted in our personal life history – what IFS now calls Unattached Burdens. The science of epigenetics, along with IFS’s work on Legacy Burdens, has cracked open the door – even for the most committed materialists – to consider that not everything we carry began with us.
This event will introduce new material not covered in previous Life Architect workshops, where Unattached Burdens were the central focus.

Past Lives as a Language for the Unseen
Past lives could be considered another metaphor system for working with clients. We will discuss the work of Ian Stevenson, MD, and Jim Tucker, MD, on reincarnation. We will also describe how to modify IFS’s Unattached Burden work to deal with these phenomena.
We will compare this modern psychotherapeutic material with the anthropology of spirit possession. There is a basic underlying biopsychological dynamic that appears in almost every culture we have records of, and in every period of history. This dynamic has profound effects on people’s lives, for better or worse. Historically, the metaphors most often used to describe it are those of spirit possession. Whatever metaphor system we use, this territory is worthy of study.

Psychedelics and the Porous Mind
Psychedelics open these deep realms of the psyche. I will discuss my over fifty years of working with psychedelics and healing, and outline why and how I believe IFS revolutionizes the standard ways of working with psychedelics.
All of this puts us in deep waters. One important guide is the concept of the porous mind, and its opposite – the citadel model of mind. Many thinkers from different fields have written about this, and several have seen the emergence of the citadel model in the modern West as a root cause of our mental health epidemic. We will refer to the work of Owen Barfield, Charles Taylor, Barbara Ehrenreich, Daniel Siegel, Tanya Luhrmann, and Isabel Clarke – thinkers who point toward a more permeable and relational view of the mind.

Meet the trainer
Robert Falconer
For the past decade or more Robert Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work (Internal Family Systems Therapy). In that time he has attended all levels of IFS training offered, and has been a program assistant more than 18 times.
Bob has been at many workshops and events with Richard Schwartz both as assistant and participant. In addition to studying with many of the other senior IFS trainers, he also co-authored a book with Richard Schwartz entitled: Many Minds, One Self. For all of his therapeutic work, both professional and personal, Bob now uses IFS almost exclusively. Bob recently published his new book about IFS and unattached burdens – The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit Possession.
Before this Bob used and explored many forms of therapy, starting with Ericksonian hypnotherapy which he studied with Carol Erickson. He received his master’s degree and hypnotherapist certificate under her tutelage. Then he met and began studying with Jack and Helen Watkins, the creators of Ego State Therapy.
Before beginning his graduate work, starting in 1971, Bob was involved with the Esalen Institute where he has attended more than 120 events and workshops.

How to Navigate the Deep Waters
Entering deeper layers of the psyche requires more than insight. This includes cultivating interoception and inner senses, and recognizing imagination as a perceptual system – no less real than sight or hearing. We’ll explore the inner world as ontologically primary, not secondary to the external.
A central stance in this work is personalism – perhaps the most essential attitude in the inner world. Here, we’ll draw from the philosophy of Martin Buber and others who remind us that our inner relationships deserve the same reverence as our outer ones. We will look at modes of attention – drawing from Iain McGilchrist, Gabriel Marcel, and various forms of curiosity – as ways to relate to what arises without needing to define or control it. We’ll explore the practice of unknowing and kenosis, releasing constraint at the far edges of experience.
This is a form of relational spirituality, found in the writings of the Neoplatonists and in animist traditions. It also includes high-arousal spiritual states, a dimension of human experience that modern culture has largely banished but which remains vital for contact with the depth.
Satisfaction Guarantee
If you’re not fully satisfied after attending the first day of our 2-day online workshop, simply let us know before the second session begins, and we’ll offer a full refund – no questions asked.

Completion of IFS Level 1 Training is not required
At the same time, you need to know the fundamentals of IFS, as we don’t offer basic didactics about the model during this workshop.
Make sure that you:
- Have completed a thorough introductory course/workshop about IFS or the IFSI Online Circle,
- Have a desire to embody the IFS Model – deepen the knowledge of your own system, and learn tools that aid you in this process.
