Someone once said that a real scientist follows the data no matter where it leads…

IFS has given us a model of mind made up of parts (managers, firefighters, and exiles) and Self. This concept of the multiplicity of mind is rapidly replacing the old myth of the mono mind.

IFS’s model has proven itself to be very valuable in psychotherapy. As we go deeper into people’s systems we begin to encounter things that are not parts or Self, such as legacy burdens and cultural burdens.

As we go even deeper we encounter what I call the others within us, unattached burdens and guides. These will be the focus of this course, and they lead us to replace the old myth that our minds are private citadels with the realization that mind is porous. The realizing holds a key to healing our underlying alienation and isolation.

Unattached burdens What works? What helps?

You will learn how to work with the client’s parts that induct the therapist into recreating the original wounding relationship and the very patterns they are struggling to change. You will discover how to use Direct Access to address the client’s unconscious attachment issues and help the client’s parts feel safe enough to relax.

Each session will have a short live demo, sharing in small groups, experiential exercises, questions and answers, opportunities to practice skills, and brief guided meditations.

The mind is multiple – a paradigm shift

For a decade I have been working in this area. I did not want to believe these phenomena were real, these phenomena make it clear that our minds are porous, and when this idea is pursued to its natural conclusions, it can be as much of a paradigm shift as the realization that the mind is multiple.

The false belief that our minds are inviolably private leads to much suffering and underlies many of our modern social problems.

This whole area is sort of disreputable and very few therapists will deal with it. So once word of my curiosity about this area got out into the IFS world I have received many referrals and I wrote a book about this entitled, “The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit Possession”.

Meet the teacher

Robert Falconer

For the past decade or more Robert Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work (Internal Family Systems Therapy). In that time he has attended all levels of IFS training offered, and has been a program assistant more than 18 times.

Bob has been at many workshops and events with Richard Schwartz both as assistant and participant. In addition to studying with many of the other senior IFS trainers, he also co-authored a book with Richard Schwartz entitled: Many Minds, One Self. For all of his therapeutic work, both professional and personal, Bob now uses IFS almost exclusively.

Before this Bob used and explored many forms of therapy, starting with Ericksonian hypnotherapy which he studied with Carol Erickson. He received his master’s degree and hypnotherapist certificate under her tutelage. Then he met and began studying with Jack and Helen Watkins, the creators of Ego State Therapy.

Before beginning his graduate work, starting in 1971, Bob was involved with the Esalen Institute where he has attended more than 120 events and workshops.

Opinions about this series

Bob is so knowledgeable and dedicated to sharing his information. He has spent decades gathering information through personal life experiences, helping his clients, and researching so many different angles of looking at spirituality and how it relates to what is considered as severe mental illnesses. Not to mention his knowledge of effective ways to do therapy. This has given me a very helpful perspective and answers to some questions I have been searching for a long time. Such an enlightening and meaningful experience.

CO

Colleen O

It was informative and interesting. I like Robert Falconer’s expertise and wisdom. The topic is interesting and not discussed in the traditional IFS trainings and needs to be since we will encounter this in our practice.

Your information added to chats was very helpful and I love the callback music. I look forward to future workshops with your company. It was an inspirational workshop, and I loved Bob’s humanity and open sharing as well as sharing his amazing expertise with us. Such an important area to learn about and so interesting. The tech support and course organization are the best I have experienced on any online training, well done all involved.

The workshop included tons of resources and practical techniques to use with clients. I am very pleased to have learned from Bob. He is brilliant and I would love to attend other workshops he leads.

The most informative, essential workshop for anyone serious about IFS. You will encounter UBs sooner or later and without the skills to handle them, you are in trouble without Bob Falconer’s wisdom.

Martin Plichta

Extremely helpful. It has been a guided tour into a strange and sometimes scary world, that I had very little knowledge of. Bob’s calm and respectful attitude towards the subject, was a great help and inspiration.

This was one of the most amazing teachings I have ever received! Bob speaks with a remarkable blend of humility and authority on this difficult topic. I would love to study and learn more from Bob – can’t wait for his book!
