A Week by Lake Superior
The retreat takes place in Bayfield, Wisconsin, surrounded by peaceful woodland and the vast waters of Lake Superior. The deep immersion in this quiet Northwoods setting offers space for grounding, reflection, and rest. You’ll have time to walk forest trails, experience the character of nearby Bayfield, and slow down while being part of a supportive group experience.

Inner journey
This retreat is a process of insight and inner transformation, with the Polyvagal Theory serving as its guiding framework. The program combines daily teaching and guided experiential work with somatic practices such as movement, dance, and sound healing. The retreat setting also includes access to local places like Lake Superior and Bayfield, a nearby town. Space is also included for rest and unscheduled integration.

A unique venue
The retreat is hosted at Wild Rice Retreat, a thoughtfully designed center set within 100 acres of woodland near Lake Superior. Its Scandinavian-inspired accommodations are modern and comfortable, with single and double rooms, private bathrooms, large windows, and outdoor spaces that connect naturally with the surrounding forest. The center includes spacious workshop rooms, indoor and outdoor dining areas, walking trails, fireplaces, and a cedar sauna with a rain room.
The entire retreat center will be reserved exclusively for our group.

Small group
The retreat is intentionally limited in size to allow for meaningful relationships and individualized attention. We’ll connect you with fellow participants in small triads for the Holding Space Practice, meeting weekly before and after the retreat to hold space, share your journey, speak for your parts, and connect.
Open to professionals in therapeutic, somatic, and healing fields: therapists, psychologists, coaches, breathworkers, movement and expressive arts practitioners, bodyworkers, and others working in client-centered roles.

Teacher
You will be guided by Deb Dana, LCSW – a clinician, consultant, and author specializing in complex trauma and Polyvagal Theory. A founding member of the Polyvagal Institute, she is widely known for translating the science of the autonomic nervous system into clear, practical tools that support safety, regulation, and connection.

Pre- and Post-Retreat Support
Pre-retreat support: Once you sign up, you’ll receive instant access to a 2-hour on-demand workshop “Polyvagal Theory in Practice: Tools for Enhancing Therapeutic Outcomes” by Deb Dana. About a month before the retreat, you’ll be invited to join an Online Preparation Circle, connect in triads for a Holding Space Practice with fellow participants, and receive our PDF Preparation Guide.
Post-retreat support: Following the retreat, you’ll be invited to two group Zoom integration circles – held one month and two months after the retreat – to help you deepen and integrate your experience.

Space for Rest and Renewal
This retreat balances structured inner work with time for rest and self-care. You’ll have space for optional massage, time in nature, use of sauna, or quiet time on the grounds. The schedule allows for both inward focus and deep relaxation. This is an opportunity to step away from conventional conveniences and embrace simplicity.
This was my first retreat and, in every way, it exceeded my expectations. From inquiry and registration to group sessions and excursions, I felt incredibly heard, cared for, and nurtured. The location was beautiful and the staffing so attentive.
Treisha Peterson, Somatic Parts Work Retreat in Bali, April 2024

Daily life as an autonomic journey
While you may think your brain is in charge, the heart of your experience and how you navigate the world, begins in the body, with the autonomic nervous system. This is where the stories emerge about who you are, how the world works, what you do, and how you feel. Sometimes you struggle to keep your balance; other times you move easily through the day.
The autonomic nervous system is both creator of, and witness to, your lived experience. It is an embodied, biological resource that is always present and ready to guide you. Science shows that with practice, your connection to the biological state of safety can be strengthened and new patterns of connection created. The nervous system knows the way to safety and connection, the way home to regulation and it’s ready to help you get there.

An invitation to explore
In this transformative retreat, you will join Deb Dana for a deep exploration into the landscape of your own nervous system. Ventral regulation is not simply a destination to arrive at. It is a dynamic autonomic state that can be awakened and deepened.
During our time together, you’ll learn to uncover and travel the ventral pathways that exist in every human nervous system, pathways that are always present, even when they feel out of reach.
You will have the chance to explore how the autonomic nervous system moves toward and away from connection, what pulls you out of regulation, and what makes it possible to find your way back. At the heart of it all is the essential question: how do we help the nervous system feel safe enough to change?

A meeting of nervous systems
Every therapeutic encounter is a meeting of nervous systems. Beneath the words, the autonomic nervous system – yours and your clients’ – is quietly at work: listening, shaping the stories we tell ourselves, and influencing our capacity for safety, connection, and change. Understanding this autonomic experience is at the heart of what Polyvagal Theory offers clinicians.
In this retreat, Deb Dana will help you to make the journey from personal awareness to clinical application, because as a clinician, your own autonomic regulation is essential to successful work with clients. Getting to know your autonomic patterns helps you create an environment that supports connection and lets you be present with clients in a way that invites them into the regulated state of safety that is a core element of treatment.
During this retreat, you will discover how to use the body’s regulating circuits to help clients regain a sense of safety, and gain skills to engage the nervous system’s natural pathways to regulation. You’ll learn a new way to accompany your clients on their path to healing.

During this retreat…
After organizing and facilitating over 30 retreats, we’ve developed a format that balances depth, structure, and space for integration. During this retreat, you will:
- You will be guided by Deb Dana, LCSW, a clinician, consultant, and author specializing in complex trauma and Polyvagal Theory.
- You will join healers and seekers from all over the world equally as passionate about Polyvagal Theory.
- You will experience multiple ways of discovering and exploring your nervous system – lecture, small group exercises, dance/movement, sound bath, forest bathing, deep body connection through guided meditation, and more.
- You will acquire new insights and skills; you will return to life and work with new ways to accompany your clients on their path to healing.
You will be in a retreat setting that includes local experiences (walking by a beautiful lake, visiting a nearby town, eating local food) and a natural rhythm of rest, reflection, and embodied integration.
- Spend time in a genuinely natural, rural setting that supports rest, reflection, and informal connection with peers.
- Stepping away from daily routines here means accepting a setting less focused on resort-style amenities and more on spaciousness and nature immersion.

All of this, and much more will be a part of our 7-day Befriend Your Nervous System Retreat in the US with Deb Dana. We will co-create a safe space for exploring our nervous systems with a support of an experienced guide.

Who is this retreat for?
Polyvagal Theory helps us understand how the nervous system shapes emotions, relationships, and healing. This experiential retreat supports mental health professionals in applying its principles in practical, embodied work with clients. No previous formal training in Polyvagal Theory is required. The retreat will provide a supportive foundation while also offering opportunities for more experienced practitioners to deepen and expand their existing practice.
This retreat is mainly for:
- Psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals,
- Practitioners who want to integrate a nervous-system-informed perspective into their clinical work,
- Professionals interested in developing practical Polyvagal-informed tools for supporting regulation, safety, connection, and resilience,
- Helping professionals who want to pause, reconnect with their own nervous systems, and experience the practices personally,
- Curious practitioners who want to explore how greater awareness of autonomic states can support healing, therapeutic presence, and meaningful connection.

2 Online Integration Circles
& Holding Space Practice
Within 2 months after the retreat
Each participant will take part in one Online Preparation Circle in the month before the retreat, followed by two Online Integration Circles in the two months afterward. All circles will be guided by a facilitator from our team, who will also be present during the retreat. Altogether, the retreat journey spans four months, offering a supportive arc of preparation, immersion, and integration.
The Preparation Circle will help create a safe and grounded group container, foster early connection, and clarify personal intentions ahead of the retreat. The Integration Circles offer a chance to reconnect with the group, reflect on your experience, and begin anchoring insights into daily life, supporting ongoing integration and emotional continuity.
One month before the retreat, you’ll get our Preparation Guide in PDF format and we will invite you to set up weekly, self-organized Holding Space Practice with fellow participants – small groups of three to hold space for each other, share your journey, and connect.

“The Integration Calls were great — not only for reconnecting with friends from around the world, but also for reminding myself of the lessons learned and the self-commitments made during that deep and meaningful retreat. The calls really help bridge the emotional gap between being at the retreat and transitioning back to everyday life.” – Mark, Somatic Parts Work Retreat, April 2025

Life changing. Absolutely wonderful all the way around from start to finish! I was so impressed with the overall experience I will definitely consider doing another retreat with Life Architect again!

Local Experiences
Set in northern Wisconsin, near the shores of Lake Superior, the retreat takes place in a landscape of forests, water, and quiet open space that naturally supports both inner work and connection with the land. These local experiences complement the process with moments of presence, simplicity, and exploration. Activities are facilitated in collaboration with the retreat center and local providers.
Here are some of the local experiences that complement the retreat process:

Nature Therapy Walk
A guided nature therapy walk offers space to slow down and experience the surrounding forest through the senses. Gentle mindfulness practices support presence, observation, and a renewed sense of connection with the natural world.

Ayurveda Class
This introductory class explores the ancient principles of Ayurveda and their practical application in everyday life. Simple and accessible practices offer ways to support greater balance in the body, mind, and daily routines.

A Walk in Bayfield
A visit to the nearby town of Bayfield offers time to walk along the waterfront, explore its quiet streets, and experience the atmosphere of this small Lake Superior community. The outing creates space for gentle exploration, local culture, and relaxed time together.

An Evening with a Native American Storyteller
A local Native American storyteller shares stories, insights, and traditions connected to the land and the Indigenous heritage of the Bayfield area. This intimate evening offers an opportunity to listen, reflect, and experience storytelling as a way of preserving memory, meaning, and connection.

Sound Healing
A sound healing session uses crystal singing bowls, crystal pyramids, and gongs to create an immersive field of sound and vibration. While resting in a supported position, participants are invited to relax, settle into the body, and listen inwardly.

Drum Circle
The drum circle offers a shared experience of rhythm, movement, and sound in a lively yet welcoming setting. Buffalo drums and resonant percussion instruments create space to release tension, awaken energy, and connect with the group. No previous musical experience is needed.

Chakradance
Chakradance combines spontaneous movement, guided meditation, and music inspired by the chakra system. Participants are invited to move at their own pace, reconnect with the body, and explore their inner experience through rhythm and expression. No dance experience is needed.

Watercolor Postcard Painting
This beginner-friendly watercolor session offers a gentle introduction to painting using a wet-on-wet technique. Participants can create a postcard for someone close to them or write a message to their future self, combining creativity with a quiet moment of reflection.

Sauna & Cold Immersion
A guided sauna and cold immersion session combines periods of heat with cooling and cold-water practices. Moving between these contrasting sensations creates space to explore the body’s responses, deepen awareness, and settle into a more grounded state.

Learning Environment & Objectives
Through experiential practice, reflection, and community, you will deepen your awareness of your own nervous system and develop practical, trauma-sensitive skills for integrating Polyvagal Theory into your clinical work.

Learning Environment
This retreat brings together the inner work of autonomic awareness with the outer work of clinical application. It is an invitation to slow down, turn inward, and befriend your nervous system while building clinical skills from the inside out.
Through guided practice, reflection, and community, you will learn to recognize your own autonomic patterns, build a felt sense of safety and connection, and cultivate a compassionate relationship with your nervous system’s responses to stress and trauma. You’ll gain practical tools for mapping states, tracking shifts, and working with the autonomic responses that shape everyday experience, and discover how to help clients reshape their own autonomic responses and rewrite the stories carried in their autonomic pathways.
Wherever you are on your Polyvagal-informed journey, this retreat offers space for personal integration and professional growth through experiential exploration of what becomes possible when the nervous system finds its way to regulation and feels safe enough to heal. You will leave with an embodied sense of Polyvagal-informed practice, ready to bring it into your work with clients.

Learning Objectives
Over the course of the retreat you’ll experience personal discoveries and practice clinical application. You’ll learn to:
- Articulate the core principles of Polyvagal Theory and their relevance to trauma-informed clinical practice.
- Map the autonomic states of the nervous system.
- Recognize autonomic activation and regulation through experiential practice.
- Cultivate personal practices for nervous system regulation that support well-being and build capacity for presence in clinical work.

During our retreats, we prioritize the well-being of all participants while maintaining a relaxed and supportive environment. We trust in everyone’s personal responsibility to contribute to a safe and mindful space. Below, we outline our approach to health and wellness during our retreats.
Before the Retreat
- If you are feeling unwell before the retreat (e.g., fever, persistent cough, body aches, or any other symptoms of a contagious illness), we kindly ask you to stay at home for the well-being of the group.
If you cannot attend due to illness, we will do our best to transfer your workshop fee to another retreat (only if your spot is filled). Otherwise, the fee is non-transferable. However, you may use the workshop fee towards Life Architect’s live and on-demand online workshops. Our library has more than 40 on-demand workshops (hundreds of hours) for mental health professionals.
- We do not require proof of vaccination or negative test results. However, if you have been recently exposed to someone with a contagious illness or are experiencing mild symptoms, we encourage you to act responsibly before travelling.
During the Retreat
- If you begin to feel unwell during the retreat, we encourage you to listen to your body—rest, hydrate, and inform our team if you need support.
- If you develop symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, or other concerning signs, we expect you to inform the team immediately and wear a mask in communal spaces and group activities to minimize the spread of illness.
- We will have masks available for those who need them.
Respect for Each Other
- Our retreat is built on mindfulness and collective well-being. Please be considerate of others, especially those who may be more cautious about health concerns.
- We encourage open communication—if you have any concerns about your well-being or that of others, please feel free to speak with our team.
This policy is based on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive retreat experience. Thank you for helping us create a mindful and healthy space for everyone!
After signing up for the Befriend Your Nerbous System Retreat with Deb Dana you will be provided with a guide in PDF format, with practical information on how to pack for the retreat, what to do prior to the travel to avoid the so-called “jet lag” (time-zone change fatigue) and where to buy a ticket at a good price, and last but not least, what is worth seeing in Italy if you plan to arrive earlier or stay longer after the retreat is completed.
The retreat will be run entirely in English. Speaking in any other language is not required at any stage of the retreat.
For the retreat to proceed, we must have a minimum of half the participants signed up and paid (at least 20 participants). If this minimum requirement is unmet, we will notify all participants no later than 45 days before the retreat.
Meals are prepared onsite at Root, Wild Rice Retreat’s dining space, and form part of the accommodation and meal services provided directly by the retreat center.
All accommodation and meal costs are paid directly to Wild Rice Retreat and are separate from the workshop fee.
Wild Rice Retreat offers:
- Ayurvedic-inspired meals centered around whole foods
- Seasonal menus featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices
- Fresh ingredients sourced from local purveyors whenever possible
- Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy-sensitive alternatives arranged in advance
- Complimentary locally roasted coffee and artisan tea
The planned dining schedule includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
