Legacy & Cultural Burdens Retreat in Italy with Kay Gardner
A 7-day retreat for mental health professionals, 5 – 11 October 2025 in Tuscany. Guided by IFS Lead Trainer Kay Gardner, LCPC, this program integrates Internal Family Systems therapy, Legacy & Cultural Burdens, Breathwork and other somatic practices to support both personal growth and professional development.

8 Reasons to join this journey

A Week in Tuscany
The retreat takes place in Southern Tuscany, surrounded by hills, vineyards, and historic towns. The natural setting offers space for both reflection and rest. You’ll have time to engage with the local landscape, enjoy Italian culture, and slow down while being part of a supportive group experience.

Inner journey
This retreat is a process of insight and inner transformation, with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model serving as its guiding framework. The program combines daily teaching and guided experiential work with somatic practices such as movement, dance, and sound healing, as well as local excursions to natural hot springs and a nearby town. Space is also included for rest and unscheduled integration.
An essential part of this retreat will be a Conscious Connected Breathwork group session, guided by a certified facilitator to support emotional healing by accessing inner body intelligence.

Unique venue
The retreat is hosted at ASHA, a center located on 15 hectares of natural land. Accommodations are comfortable, with multiple workshop spaces, a pool, and areas for rest. The design of the space blends with the surrounding nature and offers a supportive environment for internal work.

Small group
The retreat is intentionally limited in size to allow for meaningful connection and individualized attention. This format supports both depth of personal exploration and a sense of shared learning among peers.
Open to professionals in therapeutic, somatic, and healing fields: therapists, psychologists, coaches, breathworkers, movement and expressive arts practitioners, bodyworkers, and others working in client-centered roles.

Kay Gardner
You will be guided by Kay Gardner, LCPC, IFS Lead trainer has over 45 years of clinical experience and 35 years in private practice. She is a senior Lead Trainer for Internal Family Systems (IFS) and has been in leadership since the beginning of the approach, in the early 90’s.

Healthy food
Participants are served three daily meals — plant-based, nourishing, and created with fresh local ingredients. Many herbs and vegetables come from the retreat center’s own garden. The meals are designed to be gut-friendly and supportive of overall well-being.

Pre- and Post-Retreat Support
Pre-retreat support: Once you register, you’ll receive access to Kay Gardner’s on-demand course, IFS Therapy: A Spiritual and Energetic Approach, as well as a 12-day program, Introduction to IFS, designed by Michał Pasterski. Post-retreat support: Following the retreat, you’ll be invited to two group Zoom integration circles—held one month and two months after the retreat—to help you deepen and integrate your experience.

A balanced program
This retreat balances structured inner work with time for rest and self-care. You’ll have access to massage (optional), nature walks, the pool, or quiet time on the grounds. The schedule allows for both inward focus and deep relaxation.
This was my first retreat and, in every way, it exceeded my expectations. From inquiry and registration to group sessions and excursions, I felt incredibly heard, cared for, and nurtured. The location was beautiful and the staffing so attentive.

Exploring the Energetic Threads of Legacy and Culture
What stories do you carry that are not your own? How much of what you believe, feel, and embody is truly yours—and how much is inherited?
Legacy burdens are the invisible threads that bind us to our ancestors, while cultural burdens are the societal patterns and expectations we absorb from the groups and systems we belong to. Both create deeply embedded beliefs and behaviors that can echo across generations, manifesting as trauma passed through families or as systemic imprints like internalized patriarchy, colonization, or racism.
These burdens are more than learned behaviors or psychological constructs; they are energetic imprints—fields of connection that link us to our families, cultures, and communities. This energy, while intangible, is deeply embodied. It lives within us, shaping our actions, thoughts, and relationships. If left unexamined, it is passed down like an heirloom, perpetuating cycles of pain and limitation for future generations.

This retreat offers a transformative space to gently uncover and release these ancestral and cultural burdens through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Using powerful, integrative approaches, we’ll delve into embodied practices such as Hakomi, authentic movement, shadow work, sculpting, and family constellations to access the wisdom of the body and the psyche.
Together, we’ll explore how these burdens live deep in our systems, shaping our identities and constraining our potential. By attending to and unburdening these inherited patterns, we can liberate not only ourselves but also the systems we are part of. This work has the power to heal long-standing systemic imbalances—offering pathways to release colonization, sexism, racism, and other oppressive dynamics from within.
Imagine a world where these burdens no longer weigh on us, where we can step into self-leadership and create systems that are free, compassionate, and aligned with our true selves. By doing this inner work, both individually and collectively, we take a powerful step toward building a more self-led world—one rooted in freedom, healing, and authenticity.

During this retreat…
After organizing and facilitating over 30 retreats, we’ve developed a format that balances depth, structure, and space for integration. During this retreat, you will:
- Be guided by an IFS Lead Trainer Kay Gardner, LCPC.
- Join a group of professionals and practitioners from around the world with a shared interest in IFS and inner work.
- Engage in multiple ways of exploring your internal system — including IFS-based teaching, small group exercises, movement, and sound-based practices.
- Participate in a Conscious Connected Breathwork group session leb by a certified facilitator to connect with inner body wisdom and support emotional integration.
- Uncover inherited beliefs and behavioral patterns passed down from your ancestors, creating space to address and release them.
- Learn practical therapeutic tools and deepen your connection to Self-energy, supporting both personal and professional growth.
- Enjoy a variety of excursions and local experiences as a part of the retreat package: a drum circle, enjoying hot springs, visiting a nearby town, eating at a local restaurant, sound healing and more.
- Additional optional excursions will be available, such as visiting a winery with wine tasting or going to a seaside.
- Spend time in a natural setting that supports rest, reflection, and informal connection with peers.
- Step away from daily routines, with time for relaxation, movement, shared meals, and spaciousness.

All of this, and much more will be a part of our 7-day Legacy & Cultural Burdens Retreat in Italy. We will co-create a safe space for exploring ancestral energies with a support of an experienced guide.

Who is this retreat for?
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a comprehensive integrative paradigm within which legacy and ancestral work naturally fit. This retreat has IFS as its foundation and acquaintance with IFS is a prerequisite.
If you finished at least a 2-day introduction to IFS (or another online workshop or course), you are welcome to sign up. If you didn’t do any IFS workshops yet, we will share a 12-day online course “Introduction to Internal Family Systems” with you, for free (created by Michael Pasterski). Going through this course will provide you with a base of knowledge to join this retreat.
This retreat is mainly for:
- IFS-informed practitioners, seekers, therapists,
- Medical and mental health practitioners who want to grow their skills in working with legacy and cultural burdens,
- Healing practitioners who want to pause and tend to their own systems,
- Curious practitioners who want to explore the body’s potential to heal when attended to with Presence, space and time.
Meet the Teacher
Kay Gardner
Kay Gardner, LCPC, IFS Lead trainer has over 45 years of clinical experience and 35 years in private practice. She is a senior Lead Trainer for Internal Family Systems (IFS) and has been in leadership since the beginning of the approach, in the early 90’s. She also came to IFS as an experienced therapist and a teacher of Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy and as a result, helped to integrate the body into the IFS practice.
In earlier work, Kay was the founder of The Women’s Circle, a women’s program in Chicago, and has also led various successful workshops around the country for men and women, including Persephone’s Journey; Men and Their Mothers; Women and Their Fathers; as well as Sacred Theatre for Couples, which brought her body-centered theatre approach to work with couples in groups or individually.
In her most recent work, presented nationally and internationally, Kay was the first to bring the notion of Legacy Burdens to IFS and has co-developed a unique program that integrates work with energy, chakras, and developmental stages, called a Possibility of awakening. Kay brings a body-centered and spiritual approach to all her work.
She is a warm, gifted, and heartfelt presenter who consistently garners rave reviews from her audiences.

Trips & Experiences
As part of the retreat package, we have put together a variety of experiences for you to enjoy. Set in the heart of Tuscany — a region known for its hills, vineyards, and historic towns — these activities are woven into the schedule to complement the inner work with moments of presence and exploration.
Here are some of the scheduled experiences:

A Trip to Pitigliano
Pitigliano is a small hilltop town with a unique blend of medieval and Jewish heritage. During the visit, you’ll have time to walk through its narrow streets, observe its architectural details, and reflect on the layered history and atmosphere of the place.

Hot Springs
The local hot springs offer an opportunity to unwind in warm, mineral-rich waters in a quiet, natural setting. This experience supports physical relaxation and can serve as a gentle space for integration.

Visiting a Local Restaurant
A shared meal at a nearby Italian restaurant will offer a taste of seasonal Tuscan cuisine. The focus is on simple, fresh ingredients and a relaxed atmosphere, allowing time to enjoy local flavors together as a group.

Nature Walk
A guided walk through the surrounding countryside creates space to connect with the natural landscape. Olive groves, soft hills, and shaded trails provide a peaceful setting for movement, observation, and quiet reflection.

Drum Circle
The drum circle provides a shared experience of rhythm and sound in a welcoming, collaborative setting. Participants are invited to engage at their own pace, exploring how movement and music create a sense of community and expression.

Gong Bath
The gong bath is a sound-based meditation where the vibrations of the gongs create an immersive and calming atmosphere. The session offers space to settle, release tension, and listen inwardly.

Silent Afternoon
One afternoon of the retreat will be held in intentional silence. Without conversation, music, or digital devices, this time offers space to turn inward and allow whatever is present to emerge and be witnessed with care.
Techniques & Modalities
Our retreats are designed to integrate various approaches and modalities. This program was carefully crafted as a joint effort of our teacher Kay Gardner and Michał Pasterski, the founder of Life Architect and program director for all retreats we offer.

Facilitated by Kay Gardner…
IFS therapy engages each participant’s “Self-energy” to create a healing relationship with young exiled parts and the parts that try to manage and protect them. Workshop participants, as a group, can also hold a great deal of healing Self-energy.
Hakomi is a body-based practice brought in by Kay and others early in the development of the IFS model. It greatly enriches and grounds the IFS model. The body is the home and guardian of the person’s heart, soul, Self, and parts. Parts are held in the body, communicate through the body, and often grant access through the body.
Sculpting immerses participants in a healing theatre where others can play out their parts. Sculpting gives an unprecedented opportunity for individuals to see, experience and heal parts of themselves in community with others. Participants often report an hour of sculpting can feel like months of individual work.

Shadow work, derived from Carl Jung, allows us to reintegrate vital energies lost from the parts of us that are unknown, disavowed, or rejected. In brief, the two ways to reintegrate your shadow are to first look at how you identify yourself and, secondly, how you disparage others.
Authentic movement is a practice of self-directed spontaneous movement that is witnessed, offering an opportunity to discover and express thoughts and feelings that are in and outside of conscious awareness.
In Family constellation work participants have an opportunity to enact their family of origin for each other. Similar to sculpting, the enactment gives individuals an unprecedented opportunity to see, experience, and heal parts of themselves as experienced in their family of origin while in a community with supportive others.

Conscious Connected Breathwork
Conscious Connected Breathwork will be an essential part of this retreat. It’s a powerful and safe way to get in touch with our inner body intelligence. It activates and facilitates the healing process by calming the thinking / rational mind (our protector parts) and allowing for our emotions to surface.
With guided support, allowing emotions and other experiences of mind and body can be highly transformative. The practice of connected breathing causes shifts in our physiology and will enable us to explore altered states of consciousness.
We will practice Conscious Connected Breathwork in a group setting, lying on comfortable mattresses. Your process will last for around 60-90 minutes and will be fully guided by a certified breathwork facilitator.
The essence of this practice may be different to each group member. For some it will be the integration of previous experiences and closure, for others it may be deepening of the work done during the retreat, or experiencing embodied connection to heart and Self.

Experiential activities
In addition to the core retreat sessions, we’ll engage in a range of practices that support embodiment, integration, and reflection. Below is a list of activities included throughout the 7-day program:

During our retreats, we prioritize the well-being of all participants while maintaining a relaxed and supportive environment. We trust in everyone’s personal responsibility to contribute to a safe and mindful space. Below, we outline our approach to health and wellness during our retreats.
Before the Retreat
- If you are feeling unwell before the retreat (e.g., fever, persistent cough, body aches, or any other symptoms of a contagious illness), we kindly ask you to stay at home for the well-being of the group.
- If you cannot attend because of illness, we will do our best to accommodate a transfer of your payment to another retreat only if we can find a replacement to fill your spot. Otherwise, the fee is non-transferable. However, you may use all of your payment towards Life Architect’s live and on-demand online workshops. Our library has more than 30 on-demand workshops (hundreds of hours) for mental health professionals.
- We do not require proof of vaccination or negative test results. However, if you have been recently exposed to someone with a contagious illness or are experiencing mild symptoms, we encourage you to act responsibly before travelling.
During the Retreat
- If you begin to feel unwell during the retreat, we encourage you to listen to your body—rest, hydrate, and inform our team if you need support.
- If you develop symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, or other concerning signs, we expect you to inform the team immediately and wear a mask in communal spaces and group activities to minimize the spread of illness.
- We will have masks available for those who need them.
Respect for Each Other
- Our retreat is built on mindfulness and collective well-being. Please be considerate of others, especially those who may be more cautious about health concerns.
- We encourage open communication—if you have any concerns about your well-being or that of others, please feel free to speak with our team.
This policy is based on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive retreat experience. Thank you for helping us create a mindful and healthy space for everyone!
After signing up for the “Legacy & Cultural Burdens” Retreat in Italy you will be provided with a guide in PDF format, full of practical information on how to pack wisely for the retreat, what to do prior to the travel to avoid the so-called “jet lag” (time-zone change fatigue) and where to buy a ticket at a good price, and last but not least, what is worth seeing in Italy if you plan to arrive earlier or stay longer after the retreat is completed.
The retreat will be run entirely in English. Speaking in any other language is not required at any stage of the retreat.
For the retreat to proceed, we must have a minimum of half the participants signed up and paid (at least 12 participants). If this minimum requirement is unmet, we will notify all participants no later than 30 days before the retreat.
In ASHA, the food supports the physical, emotional, and spiritual journey of a retreat. They understand retreats can be transformative, and they prepare every meal with care, providing grounding and comfort to nourish the body and soul.
ASHA’s kitchen is vegan, with vegetarian options available upon request. The cheeses and eggs they offer are locally sourced from farms with high animal welfare standards.
ASHA provides gut-friendly food that nourishes and energises. They can tailor their offerings for special diets, including raw, religious needs, gluten-free, and allergen-free options.
If you have special nutritional requirements, just let us know about it prior to the retreat.
On the first day of the retreat, there will be a dinner served. On the last day of the retreat, there will be a breakfast served. Other than that, on all other days you will get 3 rich and tasty meals a day, with one exception – during a visit to a local Italian restaurant, where everyone will need to pay for themselves.
