Addictions and Eating Disorders

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) brings an innovative, new perspective to working with people with addictions and eating disorders. The current field is replete with treatment modalities and information that often offer conflicting ideas about how to best treat addictions and eating disorders.

IFS can move us into a new dimension of treatment with this challenging population and offers ways to neutralize polarizations that can occur in the traditional treatment milieu. IFS also enables us to access and heal the beliefs, burdens, emotions and energies carried by parts of the client that are masked by addictions and eating disorders.

This training will focus on:

  • Viewing addictions and eating disorders through the lens of Internal Family Systems Therapy.
  • Practical application of IFS to treatment.
  • The importance of Self-energy in the healing process.

Format: The format includes lecture, large and small group discussion, experiential exercises, practice in groups, and live demonstration.

Preparing for the training

To participate in this training, you must have completed the IFS Level 1 Training.

IFS Institute generally suggests a gap of 6 to 12 months between Level 1 and Level 2. This allows participants ample time to:

  • Integrate the skills learned in Level 1.
  • Gain practical experience by applying IFS concepts in their practice or personal development.
  • Engage in personal IFS work, whether through supervision, practice groups, or therapy, to deepen their understanding.

This gap ensures that participants are more fully prepared to engage with the advanced content and experiential nature of Level 2. Some people may need more time, depending on their professional background, personal integration, and experience with the model.

In order to ensure the highest quality of IFS Therapy, we require a statement of motivation as part of the initial recruitment process. The information about participants’ motivation and future plans is required due to formal requirements set by the IFS Institute, with whom we are organizing this training in partnership.
