We distinguish 3 Levels of knowledge and experience in IFS therapy:
- Beginner:
You don’t know what IFS therapy is or you are on the beginning of your IFS journey and want to know the basics of the model. - Intermediate:
You already know the basics - you’ve done an introductory workshop or course and you want to learn more. - Advanced:
You’ve completed a number of IFS workshops and/or an IFS Institute Online Circle and/or a Level 1 training and are ready do dive deeper into the model.
IFS CEs are available to be applied for IFS certification for those who have completed IFS Level 1 training.
experiential activities:
Energy and spirituality
Imagining energy is a leap of faith made by shamans, mystics, and energy workers, but ironically so to the physicists who tell us all life is energy involving tiny invisible particles in constant motion.
It is a world that is not static and thing-like but fluid and in constant motion, where labels and diagnoses stultify the ebb, flow, and vitality of life. A world that can be experienced and not seen. A world of shadow and mystery but also awe, wonder, hope, and spirituality, allowing us to imagine something bigger than us or even the oneness of all life.
Internal Family Systems
- For IFS practitioner, the individual is not a single entity but an inner system of sub-personalities or parts which the therapist works with, like any family system.
- Having a vantage point on the “imaginary world” of energy and spirituality is particularly rich for the IFS therapist, who has already entered an inner world requiring a leap of faith and heaps of imagination.
- You can’t see or touch parts, Self-energy, protectors, managers, firefighters, but with a little faith and imagination, you are there, and your clients, with their trust in you and with their own leap of faith, really do heal and grow in so many magical ways.

Workshop 1: Bringing our energy back home to the body. The U-turn as a Spiritual Path
During this workshop you will learn:
- How to imagine, experience, and work with energy and its not-so-distant cousin spirituality.
- That, like the physicist and shaman, the more you open yourself to energy, the more you feel its flow.
- Just as working with parts took a leap of faith, so too working with energy and spirituality will take some imagination, but the outcome can be even more rewarding and healing for you and your clients.
Know yourself as an energetic being:
- Identify how we run our energy: Do we lead with our head, heart, or gut?
- Identify how we respond to others by how they run their energy (head, heart, gut).
- Identify who we are in relation to Self-energy and the 8 C’s? Compassion, Connection, Curiosity, Calm, Courage, Companionship, Creativity.
- Are we stronger on some of the C’s than others?
- Welcome and get comfortable with our own protective strategies.
Workshop 2: Parts as Energetic Beings, Guides as Energetic Beings
During this workshop, you will discover resourcing strategies:
- How to build a strong, energetic container.
- Use meditation to help create stronger boundaries.
- Find ways to ground and get ourselves back home.
Reframe and reformulate your own energy:
- Identify how you respond energetically when activated.
- See triggers and the U-turn as an energetic and spiritual process (and an opportunity).
- Learn how to take back our energy (power) from people and places to whom we have given it away.
- Identify and work with parts that are in the shadow.
- Learn to love the shadow, for it can point the way.
Work with energy in your IFS practice:
- Identify protectors as energetic systems.
- See unburdening as an energetic and spiritual practice.
- Work with polarities energetically.
- See triggers and the U-turn as an energetic and spiritual process in your clients.
See what others say about Kay
Kay’s retreat has been an amazing gift for me personally and professionally. At the personal level, it has allowed me to go deeper into my healing journey by recognizing some of my ancestors' pain and healing, which I can contribute to the ancestor line. Professionally, it has given me the confidence to recognize legacy burdens in my clients and have the tools to assist them in their own healing; Kay’s work allows me to contribute to the work of my own parts and contributes to the healing of ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Ana Morante
I was excited to work with Kay on my legacy burdens at her retreat but was a bit worried because I know so little about my ancestors. Her confident reassurance helped me lean into the experience, and it was incredible! I connected with my mom’s maternal line and came away with a beautiful intention to travel by train across Canada to Winnipeg to my mom’s birthplace. The connections with the other participants were deep and soulful. I highly, highly recommend Kay’s Legacy Burden’s retreat!

A detailed description of experiential activities:
Please note that the teacher will respond to the needs of the group and because of that, the chosen activities may change
-
Personal practice (ex. journalling)
Personal practice means working on your own, usually with a piece of paper, after hearing the instructions explained by the teacher. These exercises may be various - sometimes you will be invited to communicate with your parts by journalling, sometimes you will do a drawing exercise (like mapping your parts). Other times you will get a more complex set of instructions and 10 or 15 minutes to do a piece of the process on your own.
-
Q&A sessions
Each of the workshops will have space for questions from the audience.
-
Sharing and discussions in small groups (usually triads)
We usually do it after guided meditation and/or after personal practice. We go to breakout rooms and meet in small groups (3 or 4 participants) to share our experiences in a safe space. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and deepen the feeling of connection. This activity is optional - you can stay in the main room.
-
Guided meditations
Guided meditation is an internal practice that you do with closed eyes, following the teacher's voice. The teacher will invite you to sit back, relax, and focus on your inner world. You will meet your parts, talk to them, and often learn things you weren't aware of before. Guided meditation can allow you to do a significant piece of inner work.
-
Demo sessions
These are session demonstrations in which the teacher does a live session with a volunteer. It may be a short, role-played session or a whole, longer session. Sometimes teachers show videos of sessions they recorded in the past.
