IFS & Breathwork Retreat in Bali
Join us on an 8-day adventure to Bali (November 1-8, 2024), where we will integrate Somatic IFS and Breathwork to facilitate a transformative healing journey for mental health professionals.
Guided by LaDonna Silva and Pablo Castro.
Take a sneak peek at our retreat:
7 Reasons to join this journey
Bali's stunning beauty will fill you with awe and inspiration. Bali is on a bucket list of many and for a reason - it's a special, powerful and diverse land. You will experience Balinese culture, connect with openhearted people and witness their rich community and spiritual life. You will also experience the richness of the natural world in Bali which is like reconnecting to a source of life.
This retreat is a process of insight and inner transformation. Our program is a unique combination of guided experiential processes (morning and evening circles), somatic embodiment practices (movement, dance, breathwork, Qi-gong, Balinese massage), and local excursions and experiences: Waterfall & Rice Terrace Trek, Water Ceremony in a Balinese Temple, Kecak Trance Dance and more.
Villa Gaia is a fabulous retreat centre set among rice paddies. During our time the centre will be dedicated exclusively to our group. Accommodations include double bedrooms (one quad) with air conditioning, plus a spacious, open-air workshop area with comfortable sofas and a view of palm trees and rice terraces. Last but not least, the swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna are available 24 hours a day.
In a small group retreat of 20 people, the intimacy fosters deep, meaningful connections, enabling more personalized and resonant interactions. This setting ensures every voice is heard, promoting a sense of belonging and mutual support, ideal for personal growth and fostering empathy among participants.
This retreat will be guided by two facilitators: LaDonna Silva (she/her), LMFT, who is a Process Therapist, an IFS Approved Clinical Consultant, a Level 3 Certified IFS Therapist and a member of the Somatic IFS Staff with Susan McConnell, and Pablo Castro, a Breathwork Practitioner and Trainer. Two different perspectives, skillsets and energies.
You will be provided with three delicious, healthy and carefully prepared meals a day and 24-hour access to coffee, tea, lemonade and snacks, including traditional Balinese sweets and desserts. During the retreat, you will try the best dishes of Asian cuisine, especially those characteristic to Bali. We will also visit some of the best traditional Balinese restaurants in Ubud.
This retreat is a time for deep insight and inner work, as well as a time for rest, restoration and healing. You will take a deep break from your busy life - this will be time only for YOU. You will try traditional Balinese massage, enjoy a relaxing walk in the rice paddies, and unwind by the pool or in the jacuzzi.
Breathing, healing
Breathing is a remarkable bodily function that seamlessly blends the realms of voluntary and involuntary control.
While we can consciously influence our breath, such as taking deep breaths or holding it, the fundamental rhythm and regulation of breathing are governed by the autonomic nervous system, ensuring our survival without conscious effort. This dual nature of breathing showcases the intricate harmony between conscious intent and subconscious mechanisms within our bodies.
Our breath is also intimately connected to our emotions, serving as a somatic bridge to access and regulate them on a deeper level. By consciously working with our breath, we can bring our emotions to the surface so that we are able to witness and work through them.
Breathing can be a powerful healing tool, both if we use it as a primary healing modality through methods like Conscious Connected Breathwork or if we integrate breath into somatic psychotherapy. We have found that sometimes our bodies are so rigid and stuck that something else is needed to open up to altered states of consciousness.
An ideal fit for this is Internal Family Systems (IFS), which allows us to soften the protective parts of ourselves, making space for a deep healing process.
The integration of IFS therapy and breathwork offers a potent synergy for self-exploration and trauma healing. Breathwork can help individuals access and engage with inner parts more deeply, facilitating access to Self-energy and releasing emotional burdens. IFS, in turn, can release inner obstacles and protective mechanisms, which allows us to truly surrender and follow inner guidance and bodily wisdom.
This 8-day retreat will be an inner journey - an experience of going deep with breathing (Conscious Connected Breathwork) and parts work practices (Somatic IFS by Susan McConnell).
You will be able to create space for whatever is happening within you and attend to it with trusted guidance. It will be like coming home to yourself - a spacious welcome to all that needs attention.
The guided group work we will do will allow you to embody a more compassionate presence in your therapy room and give you a set of cutting-edge tools, inviting your practice to the next level.
See what LaDonna and Pablo have to say about the retreat:

All of this, and much more, will be a part of our 8-day IFS & Breathwork Retreat in Bali. We will co-create a sacred space for exploring Conscious Connected Breathwork, Somatic IFS, experiencing deep insight and creating a vibrant circle of mental health professionals.
Who is this retreat for?
This retreat is mainly for:
- Mental health professionals who want to grow their skills and include Parts Work, Somatic IFS, Breathwork and other somatic techniques in their practice,
- IFS-informed mental health professionals, therapists, practitioners and seekers,
- Overwhelmed professionals who need to pause and take care of their own system in order to be able to serve their clients better,
- Curious practitioners who want to explore what our body can do when we give it the space it needs to heal.
This is a multi-modality training, and you don't have to be trained in any of the presented modalities to be able to attend this retreat.
For you to better understand the basics of IFS therapy, we will share a 12-day online course "Introduction to Internal Family Systems" with you for free (created by Michael Pasterski). Going through these materials before the retreat will help us start this journey with a common understanding of what parts are and how to work with them.
"This was my first retreat and, in every way, it exceeded my expectations. From inquiry and registration to group sessions and excursions, I felt incredibly heard, cared for, and nurtured. The location was beautiful and the staffing so attentive."
Treisha Peterson, Somatic Parts Work Retreat in Bali, April 2023
Why Bali?
Bali is our second home. We’ve been organizing transformational retreats on the “Island of Gods” since 2014. We have spent more than 2 years there.
Knowing Bali so well, we will provide you with a curated insider’s view, much more than “average travelers” can see during their journeys.
Bali has a long spiritual and cultural tradition. Its uniqueness is treasured and preserved by the Balinese. After you leave the tourist areas, you experience the authentic beauty of the people and their traditions.
There is stunning nature everywhere: green rice fields, coconut trees, palm trees, jungles, flowers and exotic plants. Bali is thriving with natural life and spiritual wisdom; you feel like your inner batteries are being charged during the entire time you are there.
The unique culture, the natural world bustling with life and rich spiritual traditions… all of these make this island an ideal spot for our retreat.
Trips and experiences
As part of the retreat package, we have put together some incredible experiences for you to enjoy. During the retreat, we will stay in the small town of Ubud, which is an artistic, spiritual and cultural centre of Bali. It's a place full of painters, healers, yoga teachers, traditional dance shows and authentic Balinese restaurants. A perfect starting point for some of the best experiences Bali has to offer, as well as for further explorations. Here are some of the scheduled experiences:
With a guidance of a local Balinese, we will take a trek through the most beautiful Tegalalang rice terraces, where you'll see how rice is cultivated and experience the extraordinary tranquillity that is so characteristic of Bali's rural life.
We will visit Gunung Kawi, a Balinese temple which is less visited by tourists. There, we will meet with a Balinese Healer (a priestess), who will guide us through a Water Purification Ritual. We will also have a chance to witness local religious rituals that play an important part in the life of each Balinese.
A professional sound healing session with Tibetan bowls and gongs inside the magic "Pyramids of Chi". A one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience altered states of consciousness and the process of releasing tensions and emotional blockage through the vibrations of these unique instruments.
The Kecak Dance is a mesmerizing traditional spectacle, with roots tracing back to a Balinese ancient ritual, which was performed to drive away malevolent spirits or serve as an exorcism. During this dance, the performers enter a trance-like state. It lacks artificial scenery and musical instruments. Instead, the captivating performance relies solely on the harmonious chants of a chorus comprising approximately 50 to 60 men.
Led by a local guide, this walk will take you to a hidden oasis with a stunning waterfall. We will be immersed in Bali's lush nature, learning about various plants and connecting to the water element. It will be an easy walk, but you'll need a pair of good sandals or shoes.
The Balinese massage is a comprehensive therapy that addresses the entire body, delving into the depths of the tissues for a holistic experience. Rooted in tradition, this massage technique combines the application of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy. During the retreat, we will visit a beautiful Balinese SPA to enjoy a relaxing, holistic treatment.
We will dedicate an evening to spending time with our local Balinese friend, a fluent English speaker with a passion for sharing insights into his life, as well as the lives of his family and community. This presents an excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the Balinese way of life.
On one special evening, we will be graced by a local Balinese dance troupe, featuring a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and intricate costumes. Adolescent locals will perform a traditional show, bringing to life the rich cultural heritage of Bali. Accompanying their mesmerizing dance will be the lively and rhythmic sounds of live Gamelan music, creating an atmosphere that is both vibrant and enchanting.
"Being immersed in this beautiful, nurturing setting with excellent self-leadership allowed me to connect with my body in ways that were previously inaccessible."
Karby Allington-Goldfain, Somatic Parts Work Retreat in Bali, April 2023
Retreat program:
During this retreat, you will learn and experience:
- How to use Somatic IFS to facilitate altered states of consciousness (including working with psychedelics) - for preparation, the experience itself, and integration,
- How to use breath to deepen your work with parts of yourself and to regulate your nervous system as you work with your clients,
- How breathing techniques can support psychotherapy - for example, how to guide your clients in using breath so that they can get in touch with their parts more easily,
- The basics of Somatic IFS with its five practices that support cultivating an Embodied Self,
- The basics of Conscious Connected Breathwork and its applications in psychotherapy,
- How to tap into the wisdom of your body by using breath and other somatic practices,
- We will also have three full, guided Conscious Connected Breathwork sessions for deepening your healing journey.
Conscious Connected Breathwork
Conscious Connected Breathwork will be an important part of the retreat. It's a powerful and safe way to get in touch with our inner body intelligence. It activates and facilitates the healing process by calming the thinking / rational mind (our protector parts) and allowing for our emotions to surface. With guided support, allowing emotions and other experiences of mind and body can be highly transformative. The practice of connected breathing causes shifts in our physiology and allows us to explore altered states of consciousness.
We will practice Conscious Connected Breathwork in a group setting, lying on mats in a circle. There will be three 3-hour workshops, which will include a breathwork session lasting around 90-120 minutes. Your process will be fully supported by breathwork providers and retreat facilitators.
One specific breathwork session will be held in water, supported by the water element. By floating in water and being held in a loving presence, one can truly experience what it is to be held, loved and free. Free to express, turn, tumble, be still and sound into a deeper connection with self.
If there is any trauma history related to water, then reading the above may make a protector come up. Please know this retreat is for you, in support of all of you. It is okay to choose not to do the water breathwork. There will be other ways to be part of and support the session.

Retreat venue
Villa Gaia (or Gaia Retreat Center) was built in Ubud, the most beautiful city in Indonesia. Ubud, set amidst gorgeous rice terraces, has been for ages a spiritual, artistic and cultural capital of Bali.
A fabulous residence combining traditional Balinese style and modern architecture. In the centre of the villa, there is a spacious open-air training room with a view over the rice paddies and coconut palms. During the retreat, the whole of Villa Gaia with all its facilities (swimming pool, Finnish sauna and jacuzzi) will only be at our group’s disposal.

CE hours
Supporting your beautiful body
We have taken into account the latest biology research to ensure that the environment where we will be spending most of our time together is optimally supportive to your body, prioritizing aspects such as circadian rhythm, sleep quality, mitochondrial function, and hormonal balance, which serve as a solid foundation for your mental and emotional inner work.
We will invite you to practice exposing yourself to sun at sunrise and sunset, which synchronizes your internal clock and many other biological processess in your body. Additionally, in Villa Gaia, there is minimal artificial light after sunset, which helps facilitate the production of melatonin and promotes a restful night's sleep.
In Villa Gaia, there is an open space training room with a beautiful view, allowing sunlight to land on your skin at all times. Sunlight exposure provides several biological benefits, including the synthesis of vitamin D; regulation of circadian rhythms, promoting better sleep and mood regulation; and the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that can elevate mood.
There will be sauna and cold bath available in the venue. Hot and cold exposure can enhance circulation, stimulate the immune system, improve metabolic efficiency, reduce stress, and potentially benefit mental health by promoting relaxation, releasing endorphins, and increasing resilience to stress.
In our venue there will be a minimum of non-native electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Awareness and cautious management of non-native EMFs, such as minimizing exposure before sleep, practicing prudent device use, and considering individual sensitivity, may help mitigate potential effects on sleep, cognition, and overall well-being.
In Villa Gaia we will eat locally and seasonally which gives us access to fresh, nutrient-rich foods that are harvested at peak ripeness (without the need to be transported from another part of the world). Also, there will be plenty of coconut water available, which provides a biological benefit by replenishing electrolytes and supporting proper cellular function.
Using red light therapy can provide a biological benefit by stimulating cellular energy production, promoting collagen synthesis, and aiding in tissue repair and regeneration. There will be a RLT device available at all times for everyone to use, along with a book with protocols for each purpose.
3-day Bali Experience
Why not stay a few days more and see the best of Bali?
We have spent on Bali more than 2 years in total and we know every corner of this island. That's why we offer you an additional 3-day package of authentic, Balinese experiences, with some of the most beautiful spots on the island. Our program is not a "cross out from the checklist as many sights as you can" type of thing - we will give you a slow travel experience, thanks to which you will be able to sink into the magic atmosphere of Bali.
This adventure will start the next day after the Parts Work and Breathwork Retreat in Bali ends and is dedicated only to the retreat's participants.
We will take care of everything - accommodation (we will stay in a different place each night), food, transportation and entrance tickets for all 3 days: the 8th, 9th and 10th of November.
Scroll down for the program highlights and the package price (Parts Work and Breathwork Retreat in Bali + 3-day Bali Experience including accommodation and meals).
What will you experience?
We will spend our first day in Munduk, one of the most underrated places on the island, a Bali's best-kept secret. It's a quiet, cooler, green region, set in the mountains north of Bali. Here, we will get in touch with the unspoiled nature - trekking in the jungle (with easier and more challenging routes available), visiting beautiful waterfalls, visiting Balinese farms and rice terraces.
During our second day, we will stay in Dasa Vayu Retreat Center, where we will meet Mangku Made Subur - a Balinese shaman who uses traditional purification ceremonies and herbal remedies as the healing arts of centuries-old Hinduism. Each one of us will get to speak to Mangku 1 on 1 and take part in a group healing ceremony. We will stay in simple, eco-friendly Balinese bamboo bungalows.
On the last day our our trip we will rest and relax in Nusa Dua, on one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. We will enjoy the warmth and peace of Balinese seaside. For those still hungry for new experiences, there will be snorkelling, with rich and colorful underwater world to explore.
