Healers of the earth
Medicine People, also known as Shamans, Curanderos, Healers, Witches, or Warlocks (just to name a few), have been the healers of the earth and its people for millennia.
Many of their beliefs and techniques are derived from their lineage, passed down from generation to generation through observation and tapping into a higher knowing. This includes listening to Spirit, the plants, the mountains, the lakes, and more.
These practices have been utilized by cultures across the world for thousands of years. Some of them have been successfully integrated in various ways into modern psychotherapy modalities, while others remain foreign to us and take us out of our current paradigm.
Mental health professionals in Western culture are increasingly interested in integrating ancient practices with modern psychotherapy techniques.
It is now widely understood that the deep wisdom of shamans and healers from around the world can play an important role in our efforts to heal trauma in our clients.
This is particularly true when the roots of their pain appear to come from sources other than their life experiences, such as their ancestors, past lives, or spiritual energies.
Have you ever wondered how it would be to enrich your own personal journey with experiences that are hard to explain by our current paradigm? And how would it be to enrich your professional practice with tools used for thousands of years?
Monique Lang, LCSW, has come to learn and honour the wisdom of both ancient practices like shamanism, mindfulness, and Reiki, as well as cutting-edge Western models such as Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. She has been a psychotherapist in private practice since 1980 and was a staff counsellor at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies for 18 years.
She has developed Earth-Based Psychotherapy, which is based on a systemic belief that all beings have intelligence and energy that can be used for healing. She studied with healers in South America, particularly in Ecuador, where she continues to travel and facilitate group retreats.
During the Ancient Wisdom in Therapy Retreat in Bali, Monique will bring a unique blend of ancient and modern therapy techniques. She will teach how to work with Legacy Burdens (through the IFS therapy protocol), Unattached Burdens (negative energies) and Shamanic practices in modern psychotherapy. She will also touch on Past Life Regression and working with plant teachers.
This retreat will be highly experiential. The presented methods will enrich your professional practice as a mental health professional, and facilitate a deep, inner healing journey.

Who is this retreat for?
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a comprehensive integrative paradigm within which ancient wisdom naturally fit. This retreat is IFS-informed, but you don't need to be proficient in IFS to attend.
If you finished at least a 2-day introduction to IFS (or another online workshop or course), you are welcome to sign up. If you didn't do any IFS workshops yet, we will share a 12-day online course "Introduction to Internal Family Systems" with you for free (created by Michael Pasterski). Going through this course will be enough to join this retreat.
This retreat is mainly for:
- IFS-informed therapists, practitioners and seekers,
- Mental health professionals who want to grow their skills and include ancient wisdom in their practice,
- Overwhelmed professionals who need to pause and take care of their own system to be able to serve their clients better,
- Curious practitioners who want to explore what our body can do when we give it the space it needs to heal.
"This was my first retreat and, in every way, it exceeded my expectations. From inquiry and registration to group sessions and excursions, I felt incredibly heard, cared for, and nurtured. The location was beautiful and the staffing so attentive."
Treisha Peterson, Somatic Parts Work Retreat in Bali, April 2023
Why Bali?
Bali is a perfect place for a retreat like that and there are many reasons for that.
It has been named „An Island of Gods” for decades. Spirituality and connecting with deities plays a very important role in the life of Balinese. With a unique blend of Hinduism and Buddhism as their religion, they have a very curious way of approaching „bad demons”. Instead of fighting with them, they see them as a necessary part of the Universe.
They welcome and embrace both gods and demons, light and shadow, and in that they find balance. According to their beliefs, there is nothing bad in the shadow and nothing good in the light, both of them simply coexist and are part of something bigger.
Bali’s rich spiritual life can teach us a lot about mental health and having a balanced inner life. We will witness and experience many of their beautiful rituals, including creating daily offerings and temple ceremonies.
From Michael Pasterski, Life Architect founder:
Bali feels like my second home. We’ve been organizing transformational retreats on the “Island of Gods” since 2014. We have spent more than two years there. Knowing Bali so well, we will provide you with a curated insider’s view, much more than “average travellers” can see during their journeys.
Bali's uniqueness is treasured and preserved by the Balinese. After you leave the tourist areas, you experience the authentic beauty of the people and their traditions.
There is stunning nature everywhere: green rice fields, coconut trees, palm trees, jungles, flowers and exotic plants.
The unique culture, the natural world bustling with life and rich spiritual traditions… all of these make this island an ideal spot for our retreat.
Trips and experiences
As part of the retreat package, we have put together some incredible experiences for you to enjoy. During the retreat, we will stay in the small town of Ubud, which is an artistic, spiritual and cultural centre of Bali. It's a place full of painters, healers, yoga teachers, traditional dance shows and authentic Balinese restaurants. A perfect starting point for some of the best experiences Bali has to offer, as well as for further explorations. Here are some of the scheduled experiences:
The Kecak Dance is a mesmerizing traditional spectacle, with roots tracing back to a Balinese ancient ritual, which was performed to drive away malevolent spirits or serve as an exorcism. During this dance, the performers enter a trance-like state. It lacks artificial scenery and musical instruments. Instead, the captivating performance relies solely on the harmonious chants of a chorus comprising approximately 50 to 60 men.
We will host a Balinese healer, who will generously share his ancestral healing practices, the secrets of traditional medicine and sacred rituals that he has inherited. He will share his views about the Western paradigm and talk about how those two can work together.
We will visit a Balinese temple, one that is less visited by tourists. We will have the possibility to witness local religious rituals that play an important part in the life of each Balinese.
With a guidance of a local Balinese, we will take a trek through the most beautiful Tegalalang rice terraces, where you'll see how rice is cultivated and experience the extraordinary tranquillity that is so characteristic of Bali's rural life.
Led by a local guide, this walk will take you to a hidden oasis with a stunning waterfall. We will be immersed in Bali's lush nature, learning about various plants and connecting to the water element. It will be an easy walk, but you'll need a pair of good sandals or shoes.
We will have two different adventures scheduled for the same day and you will get to pick the one that feels right for you. During the rafting experience, we will be navigating through the rushing rapids of Bali's scenic river, with lush greenery and towering cliffs as a backdrop. During the cycling tour, we will be pedaling downhill (requiring minimal pedaling) through picturesque rice terraces, quaint villages, and ancient temples.
The Balinese massage is a comprehensive therapy that addresses the entire body, delving into the depths of the tissues for a holistic experience. Rooted in tradition, this massage technique combines the application of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy. During the retreat, we will visit a beautiful Balinese SPA to enjoy a relaxing, holistic treatment.
Kirtan is India’s ancient call-and-response form of chanting sacred mantras as a means of cultivating devotion, elevating the mind, and fostering inner tranquility. This profound practice serves as a gateway to dissolve the illusion of separation, enabling us to forge a deep connection with our hearts. We will host a band playing live music and guiding our chants.
Ecstatic dance is a liberating form of movement where participants freely express themselves without set choreography. Through uninhibited movement and expression, it provides a safe, non-judgmental space for emotions to surface and be processed. Ecstatic dance offers a unique way to connect with oneself, tap into our inner body intelligence and facilitate healing.
"Being immersed in this beautiful, nurturing setting with excellent self-leadership allowed me to connect with my body in ways that were previously inaccessible."
Karby Allington-Goldfain, Somatic Parts Work Retreat in Bali, April 2023

Conscious Connected Breathwork
Conscious Connected Breathwork will be an important part of the retreat. It's a powerful and safe way to get in touch with our inner body intelligence. It activates and facilitates the healing process by allowing our emotions to surface.
CCB uses a core practice of conscious connected breathing. This causes shifts in our physiology and allows us to explore altered states of consciousness.
We will practice Conscious Connected Breathwork in a group setting, lying on the mats in a circle. This 3-hour workshop will include a breathwork session lasting around 90-120 minutes. Your process will be fully supported by breathwork providers and retreat facilitators.
Anna Weinrank
The CCB session will be facilitated by Dr Anna Weinrank. She holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a Master's in mental health counselling from Antioch University Seattle. She is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and a certified breathwork facilitator through Alchemy Of Breath. With 20 years of experience in mental health (5 years in the field of breathwork), she is also a former massage therapist and a long time yoga practitioner.

You don’t need to take any extra money with you, as you will be provided with everything (food, water, tourist attractions entrance tickets). However, you may take under consideration the possibility of buying souvenirs - Bali abounds in unique, local products.
Payment
To secure your spot, you can pay the full price or start with a deposit of 1000 USD.
- There are three payment options:
- Credit or debit card,
- Transferring money to our Wise account,
- A traditional bank transfer.
Please note that if you choose to pay the deposit, you must pay the remaining amount within 60 days.
The final payment deadline is the 30th of September 2023.
It’s possible to pay for the retreat in 3 installments (we do not charge any interest): the first installment being the deposit, in the amount of 1000 USD. It's payable on signing up for the retreat. The next two installments should be paid monthly within the next three months, however, the last installment is due 30 days before the retreat. If there are any delays with the payments, we reserve the right to cancel your participation without a refund (although we will send a reminder first).
Cancellation policy
According to our regulations, in the case of resignation, we will collect a fee in the following amount:
- The amount of the deposit (1000 USD) upon cancellation submitted 90 days or more prior to the event start date,
- 50% of the retreat price upon cancellation submitted between 60 and 89 days prior to the event start date,
- 100% (total cost of the retreat) upon cancellation submitted not later than 59 days prior to the event start date.
The amount will be returned the same way the payment was made.
If you have to resign, but you will indicate another person to fill in the vacated spot, this person will be able to participate without incurring any additional costs.
We don't take responsibility for the necessity to move the dates of the retreat due to the sickness of the trainers or other unexpected events that we are accountable for. If you won't be able to attend on chosen dates, then we will refund you 100% of the amount you paid.
In the unlikely events of a natural disaster, war or other unexpected events that we are not accountable for, we may not be able to refund your money. To avoid losing money, please buy personal insurance including such events.
We are not accountable for cancelling or moving the flight dates. Please buy flight insurance in order not to lose the money for your flight.
Accommodation
Retreat participants will be accommodated in 2-person rooms. There is also one quad available: a larger room with a bathtub, wardrobe and a terrace with a view over the rice paddies. We will match your roommates taking into account first of all sex and age, but also personality traits and place of residence. If you have any needs regarding this, please let us know. Couples (including married couples) are usually accommodated separately because we learned from previous retreats that sleeping in separate rooms positively influences the process that takes place during the retreat. If you prefer to stay together, just let us know.
Should you prefer to stay in a single room, we can help you arrange such accommodation in villas or lodges close to Villa Gaia. However, you will need to book and pay for it by yourself.
Retreat schedule
Day 1
The day of participants’ arrival and lodging at Villa Gaia (accommodation possible from 12 am). There are no workshop activities scheduled for that day. It’s time to rest after the journey. In the evening, around 8 pm, we meet for one hour to do a short team-building exercise and discuss organizational matters. Lunch is served at 2 pm, and dinner - is at 7 pm.
Those who come to Bali earlier need to arrange for accommodation and board on their own. You may stay at Villa Gaia, but you will need to arrange this on your own with the retreat centre based on availability.
Those arriving in Bali on Thursday will be provided with a free transfer from Denpasar Airport to the place of stay.
Day 2-7
6 days of the retreat.
Day 8
Last day of our stay at Villa Gaia. Check out and free transfer to Denpasar Airport. On that day, breakfast is provided and lunch is served at 1 pm. Afterwards, the entire group leaves the place of our stay.

Supporting your beautiful body
We have taken into account the latest biology research to ensure that the environment where we will be spending most of our time together is optimally supportive to your body, prioritizing aspects such as circadian rhythm, sleep quality, mitochondrial function, and hormonal balance, which serve as a solid foundation for your mental and emotional inner work.
We will invite you to practice exposing yourself to sun at sunrise and sunset, which synchronizes your internal clock and many other biological processess in your body. Additionally, in Villa Gaia, there is minimal artificial light after sunset, which helps facilitate the production of melatonin and promotes a restful night's sleep.
In Villa Gaia, there is an open space training room with a beautiful view, allowing sunlight to land on your skin at all times. Sunlight exposure provides several biological benefits, including the synthesis of vitamin D; regulation of circadian rhythms, promoting better sleep and mood regulation; and the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that can elevate mood.
There will be sauna and cold bath available in the venue. Hot and cold exposure can enhance circulation, stimulate the immune system, improve metabolic efficiency, reduce stress, and potentially benefit mental health by promoting relaxation, releasing endorphins, and increasing resilience to stress.
In our venue there will be a minimum of non-native electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Awareness and cautious management of non-native EMFs, such as minimizing exposure before sleep, practicing prudent device use, and considering individual sensitivity, may help mitigate potential effects on sleep, cognition, and overall well-being.
In Villa Gaia we will eat locally and seasonally which gives us access to fresh, nutrient-rich foods that are harvested at peak ripeness (without the need to be transported from another part of the world). Also, there will be plenty of coconut water available, which provides a biological benefit by replenishing electrolytes and supporting proper cellular function.
Using red light therapy can provide a biological benefit by stimulating cellular energy production, promoting collagen synthesis, and aiding in tissue repair and regeneration. There will be a RLT device available at all times for everyone to use, along with a book with protocols for each purpose.
3-day Bali Experience
Why not stay a few days more and see the best of Bali?
We have spent on Bali more than 2 years in total and we know every corner of this island. That's why we offer you an additional 3-day package of authentic, Balinese experiences, with some of the most beautiful spots on the island. Our program is not a "cross out from the checklist as many sights as you can" type of thing - we will give you a slow travel experience, thanks to which you will be able to sink into the magic atmosphere of Bali.
This adventure will start the next day after the IFS Level in Bali ends and is dedicated only to the retreat's participants.
We will take care of everything - accommodation (we will stay in a different place each night), food, transportation and entrance tickets for all 3 days: the 4th, 5th and 6th of December.
Scroll down to see the program highlights and the package price (Ancient Wisdom in Therapy Retreat in Bali + 3-day Bali Experience including accommodation and meals).
What will you experience?
This adventure will start in the morning with a trip to a local, bustling food market, where you will get to smell, touch and choose the ingredients needed for the cooking class. Then we will head to Pemulan Bali Farm (owned by a local family) where we will explore an organic garden, picking some of the plants that we will then use for cooking Balinese food. With the basic ingredients and hands-on experience, you will be able to cook like a Balinese.
Amed stands out as an indisputable heaven for snorkeling in Bali. Its diverse offerings, ranging from vibrant shallow coral reefs to a conveniently accessible Japanese shipwreck, create an enchanting experience. This will be a tranquil day at Amed beach, with an adventure for those seeking an exploration of the underwater realm.
Sidemen is a small village located in the east part of Bali. This experience is a glimpse into the traditional way of life in Bali's countryside with an insight into Balinese culture and traditions. We will do a relaxing trek through scenic farms and rice terraces, getting to know local farmers and learning about Balinese arts and crafts. We will participate in a Genjek ceremony (a traditional Balinese acapela show which is combined with a dance) and you will be able to have a 1 on 1 meeting with a Balinese healer (Banjak).
