Transcending Trauma
Working with clients who suffer from complex PTSD can often feel like being on a roller coaster. The extreme reactions, multiple comorbidities, difficulty with boundary issues and volatility in relationships make these clients challenging even for the most skilled therapists.
During the “Transcending Trauma” workshop series we will dive deep into ideas Frank Anderson described in his newest book “Transcending Trauma”, which explores a unique, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to resolving complex and dissociative trauma.
Addressing trauma in
IFS therapy
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy has a unique way of addressing and overcoming the complexities of relational trauma.
It deals with the cognitive by addressing and unloading distorted thoughts and beliefs, it incorporates the body as it supports the movement and discharge of physical sensations, and it facilitates the release of painful feelings (such as unworthiness, loneliness, and unlovability) by healing the wounds that parts of us carry.
Practical knowledge
During "Transcending Trauma" workshop series you will:
- Learn how to incorporate IFS with other models of treatment,
- Gain awareness how to address protective parts in a trauma-specific manner,
- Discover the various forms of healing associated with complex PTSD and dissociation,
- Incorporate neuroscience knowledge as it relates to the IFS model.

See what others say about Frank
I admire Frank’s vulnerability as he lets us in on his personal journey of healing and learning, which brings the book to life. Frank has brought so much to the exploding IFS movement, and this book is a crucial contribution that brings clarity and light to the often dark, confusing journey that is the treatment of complex PTSD. This book offers the first comprehensive map to working with complex PTSD from an IFS perspective and, therefore, is invaluable.
Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, Founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model of Therapy
For me, and most of my close colleagues, Internal Family Systems therapy is the fundamental psychotherapeutic approach that we use to help most of our adult patients who deal with the legacy of trauma. It is therefore a gift to all of us that Frank Anderson has written such a lucid, engaging, and comprehensive book that can help us navigate the complicated journey of resolving relational trauma. With the help of exquisite personal anecdotes, Anderson explains the deeper origins of apparently irrational and self-destructive behaviors that people have developed to deal with overwhelming realities. Most of all, he describes how to guide people in reclaiming “self-leadership” and taking back ownership of their lives. This is a wonderful book that should be read by anyone who wants to lay down the burdens of past trauma and those who seek to accompany them on this journey.
Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD, Author of New York Times bestselling The Body Keeps the Score
With his deeply compassionate attitude, Frank Anderson masterfully combines his years of clinical wisdom with the insights of neuroscience to create a definitive work on the treatment of complex trauma with IFS. This is a book that can and should be read by all therapists who work with trauma.
Janina Fisher, PhD, Author of Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma
In Transcending Trauma, Frank Anderson offers a methodical, clear, and highly instructive pathway to healing complex trauma through IFS, an astute therapeutic approach that is logically presented and generously illustrated with case examples and enriched by personal insights.
Gabor Maté, MD, Author of When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection

A detailed description of experiential activities:
Please note that the teacher will respond to the needs of the group and because of that, the chosen activities may change
-
Guided meditations
Guided meditation is an internal practice that you do with closed eyes, following the teacher's voice. The teacher will invite you to sit back, relax, and focus on your inner world. You will meet your parts, talk to them, and often learn things you weren't aware of before. Guided meditation can allow you to do a significant piece of inner work.
-
Q&A sessions
Each of the workshops will have space for questions from the audience. If you buy a recording of the workshop, you will have access to the recording of the Q&A session that took place live during the workshop.
-
Personal practice (ex. journalling)
Personal practice means working on your own, usually with a piece of paper, after hearing the instructions explained by the teacher. These exercises may be various - sometimes you will be invited to communicate with your parts by journalling, sometimes you will do a drawing exercise (like mapping your parts). Other times you will get a more complex set of instructions and 10 or 15 minutes to do a piece of the process on your own.
-
Pre-recorded demo sessions
Teachers show videos of sessions that they have recorded in the past. The sessions are related to the topic of the workshops.
