Self-energy in IFS therapy
The Self is an essential component of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy. Parts heal by unblending and then developing a relationship with the Self.
As an IFS practitioner, you need to be able to differentiate between parts and the Self in both clients and yourself.
While it’s relatively easy to distinguish many parts from the Self, the differentiation process can be complicated by parts that mimic Self-energy, Self-like parts (SLPs), which can be confusing and/or frustrating.

Self-leadership – a confusing concept?
This workshop will focus on how to distinguish between Self-energy and SLPs. As you get more insight into Self-energy, we will explore ways to form relationships between the Self and SLPs to create a more Self-led system.
We will also dig deeper into what it means to be Self-led.While Self-leadership is the goal of IFS therapy it can be a confusing concept – are we trying to be ‘in Self’ or Self-led? The workshop will bring clarity to this aspect of the model.
Finally, the workshop will address the importance of courage, one of the most frequently overlooked qualities of the Self. We will explore the importance of courage in a Self-led system and how it impacts the ability to speak for, not from, our parts.

Self-energy & Self-like parts
During this workshops, you will:
Learn to identify more clearly what your own Self-energy feels like in your system.
Gain awareness of and develop a relationship with some of your own Self-like parts.
Gain clarity about the difference between being Self-led (the goal of IFS therapy) and ‘in Self’.
Learn how the Self can be weaponized against parts.
Learn about and be able to utilize the ‘courage’ of the Self.
Gain skill in speaking ‘for’ not ‘from’ parts.

Experiential activities
Please note that the teacher will respond to the needs of the group and because of that, the chosen activities may change
Guided meditations
Guided meditation is an internal practice that you do with closed eyes, following the teacher’s voice. The teacher will invite you to sit back, relax, and focus on your inner world. You will meet your parts, talk to them, and often learn things you weren’t aware of before. Guided meditation can allow you to do a significant piece of inner work.
Personal practice (ex. journalling)
Personal practice means working on your own, usually with a piece of paper, after hearing the instructions explained by the teacher. These exercises may be various – sometimes you will be invited to communicate with your parts by journalling, sometimes you will do a drawing exercise (like mapping your parts). Other times you will get a more complex set of instructions and 10 or 15 minutes to do a piece of the process on your own.

Pre-recorded demo sessions
Teachers show videos of sessions that they have recorded in the past. The sessions are related to the topic of the workshops.
