Compassionate Inquiry Approach to Mental and Physical Illness

What is Compassionate Inquiry?

What is Compassionate Inquiry?

Compassionate Inquiry is a psychotherapeutic method developed by Dr. Gabor Maté that reveals what lies beneath the appearance we present to the world.

Using Compassionate Inquiry, the therapist unveils the level of consciousness, mental climate, hidden assumptions, implicit memories and body states that form the real message that words both express and conceal.

Deep healing and transformation

Deep healing and transformation

Through Compassionate Inquiry, the client can recognize the unconscious dynamics that run their lives and how to liberate themselves from them.

Dr. Maté will model the process of Compassionate Inquiry with course participants and instruct therapists in the practice of this powerful technique to help clients access deep healing and transformation.

Your own personal process

Your own personal process

This will be both an experiential, participatory workshop where participants will be guided through their own personal process, as well as a training to teach the method of Compassionate Inquiry to health professionals, therapists and social workers.

Naomi Klein

Gabor Mat'és connections – between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political – are bold, wise and deeply moral.

Naomi Klein, Author & Award-winning Journalist
Rob Reiner

I think a big part of gaining insight into substance abuse is an examination of its underlying psychological and emotional components. This is at the core of Dr. Mat’és approach.

Gabor Maté is a common-sense doctor and truth-teller. By looking at causes and their effects, he helps you find your way home.

Opinions about this workshop

I found the workshop extremely informative. The interaction between participants and Dr. Gabor was dynamic and I learned much about my personal life through this. My understanding of the topic of trauma, disease, addiction, and depression was broadened in such a manner that I am more empathic. The application of compassionate inquiry was made practical and brought to life. I learned so much and was pleasantly surprised.
Irene
Amazing opportunity. It was great organized and the teaching as the live sessions with participants where so incredible to have the privilage to look and to learn about CI and the work of Doctor Gabor Mate. Thank you!
Andrea Porcelli
Excellent! I like the way it is broken into the two parts: teaching and demonstration.
Workshop participant
Full of surprises, compassion and heartfelt insight, totally and absolutely worth doing if you are seeking answers for your own journey, or you are supporting others with theirs
Linda Illsley
I really liked watching the conversations between Gabor and the participants and seeing the process unfold. I also really appreciate the analogies or metaphors that Gabor uses, and his real life experiences to define/explain a term or approach.
Tinaya Jorgensen
A great way to complement the written work of Gabor Mate. The practicals where an inherent part of the journey. It shows how compassionate inquiry can be applied with laser focus to help mental health professionals identify the root cause of their trauma and get them on their healing journey, recognising it as primordial in order to help others. We need to heal ourselves when we are to heal others, with kindness and care.
Workshop participant
The depth of Gabor Maté's words and gaze touched me to the core of my soul. An opening of consciousness and a subtle transformation process started after the workshop. I use the techniques taught in the workshop in my professional practice as a shiatsu practitioner and trainer to enhance my perception of what is not openly revealed. Gabor has created a safe and inclusive training environment where everyone was listened with respect. The one-on-one sessions allowed to make connections between theory and practice. Each participant was able to develop his or her ability to analyze and feel a concrete situation.
